Soft, firm, colourful. A simple construction compresses soft layers of felt into a firm cube to sit on. Looking good in every home.
FEEL THE FELT
My latest fascination for honest, natural materials made me explore the possibilities of wool felt. Its soft texture, the different thicknesses, the non fraying quality, the easy workability and the almost endless colour variations are all material characteristics that offer great potential. As a designer I always search for surprising contrasts. With the material as a starting point I wanted to use the felt in a way it normally isn’t used. Pressing a large amount of layers together felt becomes more dense and firm. Firm enough to sit on… With this given I designed a multi purpose cube that is firm enough to sit on but can also be used as an ottoman or a side table.
To compress the layers of felt together I created a straightforward construction that combines very well with the elementary character of the felt. Two plywood squares, one threaded pin and two oversized nuts boldly hold the felt together. Plain and simple!
The numerous felt layers can be used to create different kind of colour schemes, but the cube can also be made in unicolor felt for a more sober look. The plywood squares that compresses the felt can be finished in a variety of veneer finishes.
For the first cube I have chosen a colour scheme with saturated teals and cool greys combined with the warm look of oiled cherry wood veneer on the plywood squares. The two big metal nuts give the cube a robust edge.
